The Peugeot 50th Anniversary Round Australia Rerun
celebrates the victory of a Peugeot 403 in the Ampol Round Australia
Trial in 1956.
In the first Ampol Trial, which was run over two weeks,
the field consisted of more than 100 cars, each with two or more crew
members. The aim of the Ampol was to complete the arduous course without
loss of points (for being early or late, or taking the wrong route,
etc).
Atrocious weather conditions in Central Australia meant
that many cars were bogged for days at a time. The Ampol Trial was run
again in 1957, 1958,1964 and 1970, Details of the winners can be
obtained on the Similar Trials page.
The route of the Peugeot 50th Anniversary Round
Australia Rerun is loosely based on the 1958 Ampol Trial. Click on
2006 Rerun Map to see the course.
