The 1956 Ampol Trial
The ’56 Ampol was run in extremely wet conditions and turned out
to be the toughest event to be held up until that time. It started from
Bondi Beach in Sydney and followed an anticlockwise route through Melbourne,
Adelaide, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Mt Isa, Cairns, then back to Sydney.
Hillston NSW residents, Wilf Murrell and Allan Taylor entered an exceptionally
well prepared 403 Peugeot and had taken special care to ensure its suitability
for the wet conditions that had been forecast. When the field hit the
big wet after leaving Port Augusta the Peugeot established a huge lead
and won the event handsomely with a VW second and an FJ Holden third.
